LEONEL RUGAMA was born March 27, 1949, in Estelí, Nicaragua. After graduating San Ramón High School, he attended the National Seminary in Managua where he befriended poet and liberation theologist Father Ernesto Cardenal. Already denounced as a leftist, he enrolled in the University in León under the name "Francisco" Rugama, not to study mathematics but to organize students into the student revolutionary front (FER) and to do propaganda work. He joined the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) in 1967.
Rugama's poetry is a direct, vivid, popular poetry. During the Sandinista period, one would often come across a poem of his painted in primary colors on some wall or fence, or on the side of a building or a house in the barrios of Nicaragua.
Leonel Rugama was killed, along with three other comrades, fighting Somoza's National Guard in Managua, January 15, 1970, at the age of 20.

The great-grandparents of the people of Acahualinca were less hungry than the grandparents. The great-grandparents died of hunger. The grandparents of the people of Acahualinca were less hungry than the parents. The grandparents died of hunger. The parents of the people of Acahualinca were less hungry than the children of the people there. The parents died of hunger.
The people of Acahualinca are less hungry than the children of the people there. The children of the people of Acahualinca, because of hunger, are not born they hunger to be born, only to die of hunger. Blessed are the poor for they shall inherit the moon.
